DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the history and preservation of rivercane while making a flute and leather pouch from renowned Cherokee artist\, Billy (B.J.) Welch. Simple instruction in playing the flute is a part of the class. All tools and materials provided – perfect for beginners and youth. \nWelch is a treasured Snowbird artist well known for his clan mask carvings – a set of his clan masks are on display in our auditorium. Welch’s work has been collected by the Smithsonian institution and a recent PBS documentary about him and his work recently won a Grammy award. \nMinimum of 4 students \nRegistration Deadline October 3rd \nTuition: $45

SUMMARY:Booger Masks with Billy Welch
DESCRIPTION:in local artist Billy Welch as he leads students in the creation of a Cherokee dance mask called a “booger” mask. Cherokee mask artists like Billy typically carve from buckeye or poplar\, but historically masks were also made from hornets’ nests\, animal hides\, and gourds. Masks made from gourds are known as “booger” masks\, usually with noses made with the stem of the gourd on the front of the mask as the nose. These masks are used in the traditional Cherokee booger dance ceremony to ward off evil or harmful energies. Welch is well known for his clan masks a set of which can be seen on display in the auditorium at the Center. \nAll materials provided; this class will take place over the course of two consecutive evenings. \nMinimum of 3 students \nRegistration Deadline June 19th \nTuition: $65
